How a Simple Idea Can Change Lives

What started as a misfortune for one Australian family has turned into a simple device to benefit thousands.

Perth mother Wendy Flack said she couldn’t possibly foresee her future or the business that has grown as a result, when her son had double knee surgery at the age of 14.

“The surgery left him unable to do the simplest of tasks such as taking his undies off to shower or go to the toilet,” she said.

“It was six week of hell, and it got me thinking that there needed to be a better way.”

“I came up with the idea of an underwear release device which six years later is now called Couple It and available to help anyone in that situation.”

“It was such a tough time during my son’s recovery as I had to shower, dress and toilet him for six weeks.”

“While we had all the information leading up to his surgery, no-one told us what to expect once we got him home.”

Mrs Flack said because of the ankle to thigh splints he wore on both legs:

·         Taking underwear on and off was impossible so he wasn’t able to wear any at all

·         He was embarrassed with the lack of dignity

·         He had to rely on others for basic care

Mrs Flack said his situation could have been vastly improved had he just been able to wear his own underwear.

“I couldn’t understand why there was nothing on the market that we could use,” she said.

“And that was when I decided to look into the possibilities of using your own underwear, but putting it on and off at the sides, rather than pulling up over your legs.”

Working hard over the past three years to develop her idea, Mrs Flack believes that Couple It undies release clip is going to be able to help so many more people than she first imagined.

Spinal injuries management expert and founder of Spinal Cord Injuries Management WA, Darryl Kelly said that Couple It had the potential to vastly improve the quality of life for many people.

“It’s so important that people have the opportunity to be as independent as possible, regardless of their personal situation,” he said.

Mrs Flack said it had many applications including for women in late stages of pregnancy, those with injuries, after surgery, living with disability and for carers.

Couple It Side Fastening Underwear are now available at BM Healthcare and come in a convenient pack of three pairs, with a range of sizes for boys, girls, ladies and men.
