Incontinence and Lifestyle

Adult incontinence is a topic that is rarely mentioned although many people are afflicted by the problem. Many women are told that adult incontinence is a normal part of the aging process but that is a myth. Adult incontinence does affect one tenth of adults over age 65 but the cause of the problem is different for most people. Adult men with prostate disease also suffer from adult incontinence. Some people suffer only occasional leakage but others suffer from large and unpredictable episodes that require the use of adult nappies.

Urinary incontinence is a medical condition.

Urinary incontinence is not a normal part of the aging process. Treatment will usually offer some improvement but making significant improvement is difficult. Studies reveal that most women who seek treatment have suffered from adult incontinence for six years before seeking help. There are many causes for the condition such as obesity, constipation and urinary tract infections. This is the short list of possible causes. It is interesting to note that diabetes is also considered to be a factor.

Stress incontinence can affect women of all ages

Many women suffer from weak pelvic muscles, and it is not only women who have given birth that suffer from this problem. Stress incontinence afflicts many women who find themselves facing embarrassing moments when they laugh, cough, or sneeze. As a result these women find themselves using incontinence products such as adult nappies. However, there are pelvic floor exercises that can strengthen pelvic muscles. Pelvic floor muscles are usually not even noticed as long as they function properly.

Here are a list of important things to remember if you suffer from urinary incontinence:

=> Consider seeing a gynaecologist/urologist for your problem

=> Check out all options before considering prescription medications

=> Understand that urinary incontinence is not something that comes with age

=> Stress incontinence is not part of aging

=> Incontinence does not have to determine what levels of activities you can perform

=> Understand that there is a great range of products specifically designed to suit man and women, various levels of activity, level of protection required as well as a myriad of other considerations available at the click of a button.

Consider all options before you settle on one solution. If you are able to reverse your condition without medication consider it seriously. Medications have many side affects that render the patient uncomfortable. Check out the National Association of Continence and the National Institute on Aging for more information about urinary stress incontinence.
